It seems that the registry change outlined above is necessary to allow windows to find it for a re-install. Otherise it gets an attack of the terminal stupids. I've moved a copy to each of my hard drives just in case and now I should be able to delete the version on C:\ that is taking up so much space.

It came yesterday. A multi format drive (no DVD RAM). It came with the Nero OEM suite of software (Nero Express etc) I fitted it in my newly built PC upstairs along with the cards mentioned in a previous post
I also put the laptop USB wireless adaptor on this machine which came in handy when getting the card drivers installed. Pat picked up some DVD+RW discs this morning so I'm ready to start getting acquainted with this technology now.
I'm thinking of giving this machine a workhorse role - digitising my analogue music cassettes and archiving them. There's plenty there to keep it busy over the next few months.

Drive problem

Basically my USB2 external drive wouldn't start this morning. Checked the fuse which was OK so assumed (and prayed) the power supply had packed up. Took the drive out of the box and attempted to install it inside the HP Pavilion. This has a case which has some oddities - a large air vent box and (unusually) a removeable drive cage. I found the service manual on a PDF file on the HP and attempted to print it out but the HP PSC 1205 insiste on grabbing about 10 sheets at once. So I cancelled and copied the file over the network to a Win 98 machine so I could read it on screen while working on the Pavilion. Anyway the manual insists that the drive should be set to cable-select, but when I booted up the HP BIOS (press F1 before the initial blue screen) couldn't detect it. By this stage I was fearing that the drive and the 80GB of data on it, had gone for a burton. (?) but I changed the drive jumper to slave and it was immediately recognised (phew!),

All in the cause of fitting up the PC I'm building also managed to get a soundcard (creative ct 4810) and an ATI Rage 2c graphics card for £2 each at the local boot sale. Nothing to write home about but they'll keep the machine ticking over whilst it performs its workhorse tasks.

That's just about right. Peculiar indeed - The writing on the screen is too small to read for a start. Controls are odd and it has the look n'feel of a plastic toy. But the sound quality is fine.

A Dell and a router

This took 3 separate visits to solve. My mum has a newish Dell running XP. It is on a wired network with a Compaq running Win 98 and both are managed by a Netgear GD 834G router.
Apparently the internet connection was lost after a big storm with a large amount of lightning. I found that the Compaq could log on to the router and its internet connection was unaffected. The Dell could not log on to the router via the web interface or on to the internet. I checked out the diagnostics of the integrated Intel Pro network card. All seemed OK. I managed to get some utility software onto the Dell. A Hijack This log seemed OK. Adaware found a couple of ad gateways and i did a bit of registry editing to get rid of any remnants. Still no joy on the connectivity front. Sent of a support email to Netgear. Performed a full virus scan. Found I could ping the router and a website but slowly and with up to 50% packet loss. I found a Microsoft patch to update XP with but still no joy.
Eventually I left the machine with an ad hoc single connection via an ADSL frog modem and retired to think about things.
Netgear advised by email that updating router firmware might help so I installed a beta upgrade with some trepidation. Still nothing happening with the XP machine. Changed the network cable for the second time - nothing. Reset winsock. No effect.
Then in desperation I got onto my friend Andy by phone. He scrathed his head a bit and suggested I change the network card due to the Ping results.
Presto! Everything springs back to life. Both machines can access the router and the internet. The lightning must have done for the integrated netork card. Andy is a star.
